Text Box: Windsor Spitfires GM and Coach Suspended

Recently, Windsor Spitfires coach and GM, Moe Mantha was suspended forty games from coaching and a year from his GM duties as the result of a hazing incident by his players and two fights by Spitfire teammates during a practice.

Steve Downie and Akim Aliu had a run in where it is said that Downie, the star scorer, cross-checked Aliu in the mouth, chipping two teeth only to have Alui come back later wanting to fight. Downie has received a five-game suspension, while rookie Alui only one. Downie has claimed he wants no part of the team and will sit the season if the owner, Steve Riolo, won’t trade him.

No players were suspended or reprimanded at all for the hazing incident, which is sending a peculiar message to players that you can go ahead and haze new players and get away with it. It seems that this may give the impression that hazing is no big deal, because you wont be reprehended, but your coach will be. The coach is the leader and ultimately responsible for the actions of his people, but you do not send the parents to jail for something their children did. Hazing is not permitted in the CHL, but they did it anyways, perhaps they did it because they knew they could get away with it, and they did.
